Suspension and Steering: Bogus 2 Build

Keeping your classic Mini's suspension and steering components in top shape is crucial for safe and enjoyable driving. In this post, we delve into our process for refurbishing these vital systems on the Bogus 2 rebuild project.

Inspecting and Reusing Suspension Components

  • Subframe: The good condition Rover Mini standard front subframe received a thorough inspection and was deemed reusable. This saves you money without compromising performance.
  • Steering Rack Refresh: The original steering rack, deemed serviceable, was cleaned, equipped with new boots, and relubricated to ensure smooth operation.
  • Smart Replacements: Worn components like outer CV joints, lower track control arms, tie-rods, and rubber suspension cones were replaced to optimise performance and safety. However, usable parts like the top arms and front hubs were given a new lease on life. They were cleaned, refurbished, and outfitted with new bearings.

The rear suspension followed a similar approach. Serviceable parts like hubs and radius arms were refurbished in-house by our Mini Sport technicians, while the heavily rusted rear subframe was replaced entirely. New Timken-type taper-roller rear wheel bearings were also installed for smooth rolling.

Building a Stronger Foundation: Subframe Welding

For enhanced strength and durability, both the front and rear subframes underwent welding procedures:

  • Reinforcing the Front Subframe: Seams were welded, and extra reinforcement plates were added at key points like the connection to the rear mounts, making the subframe even tougher.

Stiffening the Rear Subframe: Seams were welded to a lesser extent compared to the front subframe, focusing on specific areas for stiffening. This ensures optimal handling without unnecessary weight gain.

After any modifications were complete, both subframes were powder-coated for a durable and protective finish that resists corrosion and keeps your Mini looking sharp.

Steering Rack: A Closer Look

A meticulous inspection of the steering rack revealed a minor tear in the track rod gaiter. Here's what we did to address it:

  • New Track Rod Gaiters Installed: These prevent water ingress and ensure proper lubrication, keeping the rack functioning optimally.
  • Enhanced Lubrication: The rack was relubricated with LM grease for better performance compared to standard oil filling. This reduces mess and ensures long-lasting lubrication.

  • Precise Steering Control: New standard-length track rod ends were fitted for precise steering control.
  • Secure Mounting: New Nyloc nuts and washers were used to securely fasten the rack to the car body.
  • Perfect Alignment: The steering column was carefully adjusted to perfectly align with the rack's splined shaft, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Don't forget – proper alignment should be performed with precision equipment after the installation process.
